Please note, that yachting wire will need to be tensioned from time to time, as a regular maintenance issue, which is not covered under our warranty.
STAINLESS STEEL MAINTENANCE & INFORMATION
What is Tea Staining?
Tea staining can be defined as: discolouration of the surface of stainless steel that does not affect the structural integrity or the longevity of the material.
Contributing Factors
The relationships between the contributing factors are complex, environmental factors are generally the major source and these generally become increasingly critical closer to marine environments.
Environmental Factors
Tea Staining occurs most commonly within about 5 kilometres from the sea and becomes progressively worse closer to the coast. However, wind exposure, pollution levels and higher temperatures can create environments where tea staining might occur 20 kilometres or more from seawater. These same factors also increase corrosion rates of alternative materials.
Surface Finish
Rough surface finishes promote tea staining: The smoother the surface finishes the better. A surface (Ra) of less than 0.5 micrometres is strongly recommended, a No. 4 finish is inadequate. Grade 316 offers the best results when combined with this.
How can it be Prevented?
Stainless steel is not maintenance free but maintenance friendly. When using stainless steel, you need to clean periodically, especially in high exposure situations like coastal areas or near swimming pools. Washing regularly will reduce the risk of tea staining; this can be done monthly. For best results wash with soap or mild detergent and warm water followed by rinsing with clean cold water, always wipe in the direction of the grain (use no abrasive cleaner on cloth, these will scratch). The appearance of the surface can be improved further if the washed surface is wiped dry, to reduce the effect of chlorine. There are products available for maintenance and cleaning. These cleaners come in paste and spray form and can leave a protective film on the stainless steel, these may be needed to remove “tea staining”.
The above notes have been researched from the Australian Stainless Steel Development Association.
